What is the CDCP?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federally funded program that helps Canadians who don’t have access to private dental insurance, and who meet household income requirements, afford essential dental care. It is managed by Health Canada and administered by Sun Life.

How CDCP works at our office

CDCP covers a portion of eligible treatment costs. Coverage depends on federal guidelines, your income level, and the specific services provided, so not every procedure is fully covered. Before starting treatment, our team will review your benefits with you, explain any potential out-of-pocket costs, and help you understand what to expect.

CDCP works differently from traditional insurance. Our goal is to guide you through it clearly, so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

  • We bill Sun Life directly. For CDCP patients, you only pay your co-payment and any difference between our fee and the CDCP fee.
  • Some treatments need approval first. Treatments like crowns and dentures need Sun Life’s approval before we begin. We’ll send that request for you.
  • Tell us when you book. Let us know you’re a CDCP patient when you book, so everything is ready for your visit.

Who is eligible?

To qualify, you generally need to meet four requirements:

  • No access to dental insurance through an employer, pension, or private plan
  • An adjusted family net income under $90,000
  • Canadian residency for tax purposes
  • A filed tax return for the previous year (and your spouse or partner’s, if applicable)

Confirm your eligibility on the Government of Canada website.

Co-payment levels

Your share of the cost depends on your adjusted family net income:

0%co-payment under $70,000
40%co-payment from $70,000 to $79,999
60%co-payment from $80,000 to $89,999

Renew every year

  • Coverage must be renewed each benefit year.
  • Bring your latest eligibility letter to your visit so we can apply the correct co-payment level.
  • The Government of Canada never charges a fee to apply for or renew the CDCP. Be cautious of scams.

Common questions

Yes. Carling Harmony Dental proudly accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan and can guide you through your eligible benefits.
Not always. Coverage depends on your adjusted family net income, the services you need, and the CDCP fee guide. If a fee is above the CDCP amount, you may be responsible for the difference. We explain any out-of-pocket costs before treatment.
Bring your Sun Life CDCP member card or member number, your most recent eligibility letter, and a list of any medications.
